“The Song of Melancholy” / “Only Fool! Only Poet!”—Nietzsche’s Philosophical Poetry

This article analyzes Nietzsche’s poem “The Song of Melancholy,” which later appeared in the Dionysus Dithyrambs under title “Only Fool! Only Poet!”. While Nietzsche scholars have noted that outlines a new poetic program this valorizes commonly devalued terms “lie” and “robbery,” question poet’s relationship to truth remains controversial. Existing interpretations tend read phrase “only poet” as limiting pejorative, excluding poet from any pursuit truth. The reason for interpretation lies fact that, according scholarship, (as absolute) was abolished analysis nihilism.
